people who want to live in lighthouse - i hear you, i understand you
but i raise you
living in water tower
safer (you not gonna die horrid death so easy), not so cursed but still ominous, you are alone bc you are in a tower but you can do groceries no problem, just chilling above everything else
and look at those beauties!! (from Poland <3)
as an american i was very confused by this post until i got to the images because our water towers look like this, which, as you can imagine, is a completey unsexy place to live
Maybe if you decorated a little bit, made the place your own. Oh and first they’d have to stop keeping water in it
Just for fun you could run around the Warner Movie Lot
When I was a kid, I used to look out into the distance and imagine colossal creatures towering over the mountains, too big to possibly notice a tiny human like me.
One day, my grandpa saw me staring out and took me aside.
“Never do that again.” he said. “They might look back.”
The left never radicalized, the center has just been dragged further and further right until we became radical by not moving.
When I was 10 I asked my dad to explain politics to me and when he was done with his shockingly nuanced description of the American bipartisan system he asked me how I would structure the government if it was up to me. I described a world where everyone was paid what they needed, had a house, and enough food. He said, “Void-juice that’s great, but you should know most people call that communism”.
I’ve told this story on here before but @void–juice’s story made me think of it again…
My dad worked for NASA and he did a lot of work on the telescopes that went up in the late 90s/early 2000s. I was a curious kid and I knew his work really mattered to my dad so I was always asking about when things were getting launched. Often the answer was “we’re waiting on Congress for funding” or similar. And one time… I was probably about 10 years old, I said “well… I guess that makes sense. I’m sure going to space is one of the most expensive things we do.”
And my dad looks at me… I’ll never forget the look on his face. He goes “What do you think the most expensive thing we do as a country is?”
And I hemmed and I hawed because I was sure it wasn’t the space program even though I was sure that had to be in the top three. My first guess was education. Everyone had to go to school. Nope. Roads? Bridges? Cars were everywhere. Nope. What about… things like electricity? Phone lines? Cable? Nope.
“The military. By a factor of ten at least.”
I was gobsmacked. It was peacetime (at least by most reckoning… this was post-Gulf War and well before 9/11). What the hell was the military doing being so expensive if we weren’t doing anything with it?
So that was the moment I became a “radical.” Because that was absolutely stupid and continues to be.
Every time I get groceries I’m always appalled at how little you can get for like, $20. I was making banana pudding so I needed vanilla wafers but the brand name nilla wafers cost $4 a box. The minimum wage in my state is $7.25/hr. My friend put it really well when he said “imagine you work for an hour and someone hands you two boxes of nilla wafers and said ‘actually this is a bit more than what I owe you’”
How are some of y’all missing the point so bad. “Shop at aldi instead” “make your own food” “don’t buy brand name” “don’t buy unhealthy processed food” It’s not about the box of cookies. This is about how minimum wage pays peanuts and has stagnated for 12 years while the cost of living keeps growing. No one wants your financial advice about how to survive on beans and rice and frozen veggies. The smartest grocery list in the world is not gonna help you budget your way out of poverty. Please get a grip for the love of god
The smartest grocery list in the world is not gonna help you budget your way out of poverty.
That rabbit/hare post is messing me up. I’d thought they were synonyms. Their development and social behavior are all different. They can’t even interbreed. They don’t have the same number of chromosomes. Dogs, wolves, jackals, and coyotes can mate with each other and have fertile offspring but rabbits and hares cant even make infertile ones bc they just die in the womb. Wack.
These
are more genetically compatible than These
and that’s why morphology-based phylogeny has Issues
The problem is perspective. People always think dogs are the ‘standard’ animal, the metric to use for whether or not two organisms “look like” they’re related. When in fact they’re a massive outlier due to the fact that we fucked up this lineage of wolf beyond recognition with selective breeding. It’s why people always say “breed” when they mean “species”, especially when talking about groups like lizards which can’t even be defined cladistically since some of them are closer to snakes than each other. To say nothing of fish.
I once read an article that emphasized there is no such thing as a fish. Sharks and rays, lamprey, lobe-finned fish like lungfish and coelacanth, bichir and sturgeon, and of course the multiple infraclasses of more “modern” fish groups are all only very distantly related to one another. They’ve maintained semi-similar body structures only because there are limited ways to efficiently move through water as a vertebrate.
This
And this
Are more distantly related from one another than you and I are from a lungfish
Which is absolutely fuckin wild.
Not only that, but all of us air-breathing land vertebrates, all the lizards and chickens and people and frogs, are closer to one another than those three “fish” are to one another as well.
these
are genetically closer than these
and…
these
are genetically closer than these
and my personal favorite, it really fucks with people…
these
are more genetically similar than these
COOL.
i’d just like to add that this
is more related to this
than this
this is not a joke—elephant shrews, ends up, are not shrews but are actually closely related to elephants.
